Switching to a UK keyboard map in Ubuntu

For some reason my keyboard started acting all American today – giving me a @ instead of ” for example. I genuinely have no idea what I had done to cause it but to fix it I did

sudo xmodmap /usr/share/xmodmap/xmodmap.uk

I had this problem too and xmodmap fixed it, but every time I log in it’s American again. Any idea how to do it permanently? Cheers
